Germany 2.0
The other day KingKiKapu of fellow indie team Elite Software messaged me that he was called by an employee of his bank because he used “Whores and Crack” as a subject in a bank transfer. The employee asked whether this was in order.
Now how does that make you feel?
If this leaves a queasy feeling for you like it does for me, you should consider signing the Arbeitskreis Vorratsdatenspeicherung’s constitutional complaint against data retention. Why, I hear you ask, since the planned data retention has nothing (directly) to do with bank transfers? Well, imagine a local authority calling you, asking why you mentioned the word “bomb” in your last call to [your girlfriends name here] yesterday at 17:30 and the word “assault” in a sequencing call to [your flings name here] - and, further, why you finished both calls with “i love you, honey”, dirty bastard?
Yes, actually recording of whole conversations is not yet part of the current plans of our beloved government. But it’s the logical consequence that will follow if they succeed in realizing their plans because keeping only connection data won’t help them with their stated aim, i.e. counterterrorism. And if they get far enough to save connection data they will argue that there’s no reason not to record conversions or internet data, too.
We have this wonderful thing called “Informationelle Selbstbestimmung” here in Germany (informational self-determination, i.e. you decide which data about you gets published and is used anywhere) and we should never let the government take this right away.
Nip things in the bud!
There’s an interesting video of attorney Starostik and “padeluun” of Arbeitskreis Vorratsdatenspeicherung where they explain the governments plans, the intention of the Arbeitskreis in general and the complaint in particular.
Chris and mattin and I already signed. Now go and sign, too.

Makes me rethink my habit that I use subjects like ‘Atommüll’ and similar for private transfers..
